For most tradies, Google Maps for business is where the work comes from. Someone searches "electrician near me", Google shows a map with three businesses under it, and most people call one of those three. This guide explains how your business gets on Google Maps, how Google picks those three, what actually helps, and how to see where you really show up across your area.
- You get on Google Maps with a free, verified Google Business Profile, often called your Google business page.
- Service-area businesses, like most tradies, can hide their home address and list the suburbs they cover instead.
- Google picks the businesses it shows using three things: relevance, distance and prominence.
- The most useful things you can do: complete your profile, choose the right categories, get steady reviews and reply to them.
- Where you show up changes from suburb to suburb, so checking from one spot doesn't tell the whole story.
How a business gets on Google Maps
Your listing on Google Maps comes from your Google Business Profile. It's free, and it's the same listing that shows your reviews, hours, photos and phone number when someone searches your name.
For the full set-up, work through our Google Business Profile checklist. If you've set it up and still can't find yourself, read Google Business Profile not showing up.
If customers don't come to you, Google expects you to set up as a service-area business: no street address shown, just the areas you serve. Showing a home address you don't serve customers from can cause problems with your profile.
How Google picks the 3 businesses it shows
Google says local results are mainly based on three things. In plain words:
| What it means | What you can do | |
|---|---|---|
| Relevance | How well your profile matches what the person searched | Right categories, a clear description, your services listed |
| Distance | How far you are from the person searching, or the area they named | Not much. You can't move your business, but you can list your real service areas |
| Prominence | How well known and trusted your business is | Reviews, replies, photos, a complete profile, a good website |
Distance is the reason two people in different suburbs see different top 3s for the same search. You might be first in the suburb next to your base and nowhere 15 km away. That's normal.
No one can guarantee a position on Google, and Google doesn't let anyone pay to be in the Maps top 3 apart from ads, which are labelled as sponsored.
The most useful things to do for Google Maps SEO
"Google Maps SEO" just means improving the things Google looks at. For a tradie, these matter most:
- Your main category is right, and you've added extra categories that fit (like "Hot water system supplier" for a plumber who does them)
- Your services are listed, using the words customers search
- Your description says what you do and the main suburbs you cover, in plain words
- Your service area matches where you actually work
- Your phone number, website and hours are correct and match your website
- You add real photos of your work regularly
- You ask every customer for a Google review and get new ones every month
- You reply to every review, good and bad
- You post an update every week or two
- Your website mentions your services and the areas you cover
For more on reviews, read how to get more Google reviews. For the website side, see SEO for tradies.
How to see where you actually show up
Searching your own business from your phone at home only tells you what Google shows at your house. Customers across your area see something different.
For a rough free check, search your main service while you're on jobs in different suburbs and note where you appear. It's slow, but it's a start.
A better way is a ranking map: checking your position from a grid of spots across your service area, so you can see which suburbs you're strong in and where you drop off.

ReviewRank checks your position from up to 49 spots across your area every week, and shows who's beating you. $29 a month.
What ReviewRank shows you
ReviewRank is our app for Australian tradies, made in Adelaide. You connect your Google Business Profile and get a first report straight away: your profile score, where you show up, who's beating you and what people searched to find you.
- Ranking map: ReviewRank checks Google Maps from a grid of up to 49 spots across your service area (5 to 50 km), for up to 5 searches like "emergency plumber". Gold dots mean top 3, blue means 4th to 10th, faint means further down. It's checked every week and names the suburbs, like "Top 3 in Norwood, not in the top 10 in Modbury". It also shows how many people search each term a month in your city.
- Competitors: the businesses most often in the top 3 around you, their reviews, photos, categories and "How to catch them" suggestions.
- Fix my Google profile: 13 checks scored out of 100. ReviewRank writes each fix, like a better description or the extra categories the businesses beating you use, and "Auto Fix Now" applies it to Google. Service areas and photos you do yourself, because Google doesn't let apps set them.
- How customers find you: Google's own numbers for your profile, like views, calls and website visits, plus the actual words people searched, each with a "Track on map" button.

ReviewRank needs a Google Business Profile to work, and it works whoever built your website. It doesn't run ads or guarantee rankings. It shows you where you stand and what to fix.
