Google Business Profile not showing up? 9 reasons and how to fix them

Your listing is set up but customers can't find it on Google Maps. Here are the common reasons, especially for tradies who hide their address, and how to fix each one.

Google Business Profile not showing up? 9 reasons and how to fix them

You've set up your Google Business Profile, but when you search for your trade and suburb, you're nowhere to be seen. It's one of the most common frustrations for local businesses. Usually there's a clear reason, and most of them can be fixed in an afternoon.

Key takeaways
  • First check whether your profile is verified, live and not suspended. Nothing else matters until it is.
  • Searching your own business name and searching "plumber Norwood" are different tests. Missing from the second is a ranking problem, not a missing listing.
  • Service-area businesses that hide their address can still rank, but they rely more on relevance and reviews.
  • Complete details, the right categories, steady reviews and a good website behind your listing are what move you up.

First: is it missing, or just not ranking?

Search your exact business name on Google. If your profile appears on the right (or at the top on a phone), it's live. You're not missing, you're just not ranking for your trade and area yet. Skip to reason 4.

If it doesn't appear even for your own name, start at reason 1.

1. The profile isn't verified yet

Google won't show unverified profiles in search. Sign in at business.google.com and look for a "Verify" prompt. Verification can be by phone, email, video or postcard depending on your business, and it can take a few days after you submit.

2. Your profile is suspended or under review

If Google thinks something breaks its guidelines, it may suspend the profile or hold changes for review. Common triggers are keywords stuffed into the business name, a virtual office or PO box used as an address, or several listings for one business. Your dashboard will usually show a warning. Fix the cause, then request a review.

3. You recently made big changes

Changing your name, address, category or phone number can trigger a re-check, and your profile may drop out of results for a few days while Google reviews it. Make changes one at a time, and avoid editing the same details over and over.

4. You hide your address (and that's OK)

Most tradies run a service-area business and hide their home address, which is exactly what Google recommends. You can still show in the map results, but Google ranks you on relevance and prominence more than distance from the searcher.

Make sure your service areas list the suburbs or regions you actually cover. Keep it realistic: listing the whole state doesn't help.

5. Your categories don't match what people search

Your primary category is one of the biggest ranking factors. If you're a plumber listed as "Contractor", you'll struggle to show for "plumber". Choose the most specific primary category, then add secondary categories for other real services. Our Google Business Profile checklist has examples for plumbers and electricians.

6. Your profile is incomplete

Google favours complete profiles. Fill in everything that applies:

  • Business hours (and holiday hours)
  • Services, with short descriptions
  • A description that says what you do and where
  • Photos of your work, your van and your team
  • Your website link
  • Regular updates

7. Not enough recent reviews

Reviews are a major part of how Google judges which local businesses to show. A competitor with 60 recent reviews will usually outrank one with 4 from two years ago. Ask every happy customer, every time. Read how to get more Google reviews, and reply to each one: see how to respond to Google reviews.

8. No website, or a weak one, behind your listing

Google uses your website to understand what you do and where. A profile linked to a site with a page for each service and the areas you cover has much more to work with than one linked to a Facebook page, or to nothing. See what should be on a tradie website.

9. There's a duplicate listing

An old listing from a previous address, phone number or business name can split your reviews and confuse Google. Search for your business with old details. If you find a duplicate, request to remove it or merge it through Google's support, rather than creating another new profile.
